The first settlers were the Talaiotic people who inhabited the island from 1500-123 BC. They built the famous talayot stone structures including the Talaiot de Ses Païsses near Capdepera.
Later, the Romans arrived and called the town Arta. Ruins of a Roman settlement can still be seen at Cales Coves.
In 902 CE, Moorish forces conquered the island and built defensive towers along the coastline. The town’s name Capdepera derives from the Catalan for ‘headstone’ referring to these towers.
King Jaume I recaptured the island in 1229 and Capdepera town was established inland away from pirate raids. Construction began on the imposing castle in 1300.
For centuries, Capdepera remained a quiet agricultural and fishing community. It wasn’t until the late 1950s that the tourism industry began to develop in the area.
Today, the town successfully blends its historic past with its modern role as a popular tourist destination. Ancient sites rub shoulders with lively bars and restaurants, creating a fascinating tapestry.
