Cala Ratjada Llampuga Festival (Golden Mackerel) @ Cala Ratjada Llampuga Festival | Cala Ratjada | Illes Balears | Spain

If you find yourself in Cala Ratjada on the second weekend of October, you will come across a festival dedicated to – a fish!

The fish in question is the Llampuga (pronounced yam-poo-ga) or Golden Mackerel in English, and at this time of year they are being landed at this and other ports on Majorca. The festival happens over three days and nights, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, each having its own theme.

For instance on Saturday night there may be a giant paella containing the Llampuga, I saw the pan from the previous night, it was so large that it had to be transported on the back of a lorry. On the day I attended, there were a large number of stalls around the show area, each featuring a different dish containing the Llampuga.

Hotels and restaurants around the island come up with a recipe for the fish and offer it at the festival. There is a fee to enter the area, but this gives you a number of vouchers (six when we went), which you present at one of the stalls in exchange for your selected dish – be aware that even the deserts contain the fish!!

There are even vouchers for a couple of drinks too and extra vouchers can be purchased once inside the event. The Llampuga itself has a taste that is a cross between a sardine and a mackerel, with a pleasant texture.

Large tents containing long tables and benches are provided for you to sit, eat and drink once you have selected your dishes. There are two ‘sittings’, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, both are well attended but most of the locals go to the evening sessions.

Entertainment is provided and a good atmosphere is created for this most unusual festival in Cala Ratjada.

Pollensa Wine Fair Majorca @ Santo Domingo's Cloister | Pollença | Illes Balears | Spain

Every year the association “Vi Primitiu” and Pollensa’s Town organise a wine fair in Santo Domingo’s Cloister, Pollensa. At this fair you’ll be able to enjoy wine discussions, exhibitions and tastings. If you enjoy any of the wines, you’ll also get a chance to buy them.

Christians and Moors (Moros y Cristianos) Festival Fight in Soller – Majorca @ Soller
May 9 – May 11 all-day
Christians and Moors (Moros y Cristianos) Festival Fight in Soller - Majorca @ Soller | Sóller | Balearic Islands | Spain

If you find yourself around the Soller area of Majorca on the 10th of May,  a trip to the port will give you the experience of a battle between the Christians and the Moors. Don’t worry though because it is the yearly re-enactment of the time when King Jaime of Spain routed the Moors from Majorca. In fact, there are many such occasions on the island, but the Soller ‘battle’ starts off the ‘season’.

The battles themselves are scripted and turns are taken as regards who ‘wins’ but sometimes it is hard to believe there is a plan to the event at all. It is best to be in the port about four o’clock as the battle ‘kicks off’ around five. It is easy to spot who is who at first as the people depicting the ‘Moors’ cover themselves in dark body paint – the ‘Christians’ are dressed in modest clothes, the women wearing headscarves.

It should be noted that a great deal of drinking takes place on these occasions together with the use of hundreds of explosive devices, a bit like the ‘bangers and ‘rip rap’ type of fireworks we are used to around Guy Fawkes night (who incidentally was Spanish). There are also more heavy duty ‘ordinance’ used in the form of blank shotgun cartridges.

The various fireworks can be detonated anywhere around the festivities and very young children can sometimes be seen setting them off, so be aware of this. It also is traditional for those with body paint on to transfer this on to others completely at random, so again be aware of this and do not be offended if some strange ‘Moor’ puts a couple of black stripes on your face or arms etc. as they are passing – it is all part of the day.

Everyone in the town joins in and there are crescent moon and cross of St. George flags on nearly every balcony and house. The children dress up too and many have either straight or curved toy swords depending on who they are depicting. The trams that run into the port are very full today and if you are catching one (for it is best to park out of town) be prepared for a squeeze!

Both during the ‘battle’ and afterwards a copious amount of alcohol is drunk and it is not unusual to see groups of participants with 5 litre water containers full of wine! There was even a group with a barrel on a small cart on the day we attended.

Go and see this or another ‘battle’ if you can – it is well worth it.

Medieval Fair in Capdepera Majorca @ Medieval Fair in Capdepera
May 15 – May 17 all-day
Medieval Fair in Capdepera Majorca @ Medieval Fair in Capdepera | Capdepera | Illes Balears | Spain

In 2000, the first medieval market was organised for the 700 year commemoration of the foundation of the Capdepera Castle by King Jaume II in 1300 AD. The market repeats every year on the third weekend of May.

During 3 days the town of Capdepera dresses itself with medieval garments, full of colours, sounds and smells which transport the visitor back in time.

The townhall provides wood shields to the families, who paint their heraldic family name representation on them. Then the shields are hung on the front of the houses or from the windows.

As well as the market, you’ll be able to enjoy medieval art demonstrations, traditional musicians, falconers, etc.

The market sellers get into the spirit of things by dressing up in medieval clothing. All the stalls are handcrafted goods. You’ll find traditional herbalists, woodworkers, ironworkers, magicians, musicians, etc. During the market you’ll also be able to enjoy live medieval music.

The market started in the year 2000 and has gradually grown size. Last year there were over 80 stalls opened from 10am till midnight. The market runs from Orient square, through Major Street, all the way to the top of the castle.
